The Touch (2002)
Starring Michelle
Yeoh (Yin), Brandon Chang (Tong), Ben Chaplin (Eric), Richard Roxburgh
(Karl)
Michelle’s
first production, an interesting twist on
the adventure film. Part of a long line of acrobats, Michelle’s
family
(which includes Brandon Chang in his first role, along with Ben Chaplin
and
Richard Roxborough) has been sworn to use their skills in the martial
arts
to protect an ancient Buddhist treasure. Roxborough plays a
greedy
businessman who wants the sharira, and who has been trying to dig up
the
clues for it, using Chaplin to do the thefts for him. Very good
for
a first time out, there are a couple of interesting scenes (in one
sequence,
Roxborough tosses a grenade into a cave that Michelle is in and she is
buried
under a huge pile of dirt. Immediately afterward, Chaplin, her
love
interest, gets shot (but in a way he doesn’t get injured but is knocked
out),
and he recovers shortly and digs through to the other cave to rescue
Michelle.
Question: how long could she really hold her breath…?). Despite
these
few scenes, the film is overall very good, has some drama scenes, and
hopefully
will be released by Miramax in US theaters soon.
