Soong Sisters (1997)
A purely dramatic role, this is the story of 3 of the
most famous women in the history of modern China. One married Sun Yat-sen,
the man who brought democracy to China, one married Chang Kai-shek, who was
that country’s defender and who established the country of the Republic of
China when he was driven out, and the other married a rich man who was the
Minister of Finance for Sun. When you see the movie, you’ll realize
why they were so influential in recent Chinese history; in fact, a few weeks
after I got to see this movie in a theater, there was a bit about Soong Mei-ling
in the newspaper, the last of the sisters, who was in San Francisco at the
time. Really very well told.
